the underground garden campaign

what we did

On December 5th, we decided to bring to the underground environment of the Sèvre-Babylone station some life: to be more precise, 3 beautiful plants in pots, one for each member of our group that were there to promote our project.

our message

The subway stations are a stagnant indoor environment that lacks proper ventilation hence allowing pollutants to build up in increased amounts, stick around and damage our health by breathing the air underground.

Plants have positive effects on the air quality, filtering the air. Adding potted plants to a closed space has been shown to reduce the number of air particulates we are so concerned about.

A part of the pollutant substances present in the subway air, as well as carbon dioxide, is absorbed by the plants, that further process it into oxygen through photosynthesis.

And this is not all! Beyond air quality, plants simply make people feel more positive!

Plants would be a nice solution contributing to the improvement of the air quality, that would also make the metro more attractive. In the metro station Gare de Lyon on the line 14th, there is already a plant wall, but we think it is not enough, given the dimensions of the whole subway system. Thus, we think that it would be great to extend this to more than one station.

We want to organize a sensitization campaign in one of the most frequented stations of the Paris subway we would choose based on your suggestions in order to promote awareness of the poor air quality issue. “The Underground Garden Day”, as part of our bigger campaign, would be a day when each one of you could participate to pass on our message: you will choose one plant pot from our distribution to stand that you can add your name or your message on and you will be invited to place it on a specially designed area underground.

At the end of the day, we will have a beautiful Underground Garden to illustrate our involvement for the cause.
