unmask my subway

Unmask my Subway is a campaign inspired by the Health and Environment Alliance’s campaign “Unmask my City”, that has been launched on the 2nd of May 2017, on World Asthma Day in Europe, as part of a worldwide initiative dedicated to improving air quality.

what we did

On the 22nd of November, we went to the Sèvres-Babylone station on the 12th subway line, the 6th most used line in Paris, according to our online survey.

We placed ourselves at the entrance of the station and we started distributing regular face masks to people entering the subway, explaining to the rushed people of Paris the health risks they are assuming by taking the subway, in terms of air pollution.

The first layer of the message we are promoting is that every subway user should have face protection.

This measure may seem extreme nevertheless, face masks do filter to some extent dirt, dust and a limited number of harmful particles.

 

We are looking forward to organizing a massive campaign in several principal stations, so people would become more aware of the increased levels of pollution in the subway environment and take measures to protect themselves against it.

However, what we are looking for with this campaign is, as a second layer of the message we are promoting, for everyone to know that the Paris subway is one of the most polluted places in the city and to take action to make the air in the subway environment more breathable.

 

 

In fact, it has been proven that the use of face masks has a reduced effectiveness when it comes to protecting against air pollution.
